The rings that go around the plastic milk jug tops. You know, the safety seal. There has actually been studies performed about what toys cats prefer most. It included feathers, jingles, catnip, everything, but the cats enjoyed the most simplest item more than any others.
i brought home a box from work once, and my cat enjoyed it more than all her toys put together. get one that she can jump into from the top and yet fit all the way down into, so she can hide and watch you. don’t tear off the flaps, either, they make great chew toys.
My cousin’s cats love being played with using a Cyperus alternifolia stem. (Want some? I’ll share.) Zero cost, non hazardous, dries beautifully, 5 out of 5 cats agree…oh, here’s a visual, sorry not the best: =+Umbrella+Sedge++Cyperus+alternifolia&p=cyperus+alternifolia+plant&type=JPG&oid=1ac0c00e376dea12&fusr=Stacey+Ewing&tit=+Umbrella+Sedge++Cyperus+alternifolia&hurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.flickr.com%2Fphotos%2Fstaceyewing%2F&no=1&tt=6&sigr=11jtkq1j1&sigi=11d02307k&sigb=13ccdv86s&sigh=119gm4hj1 Mine are over 5′ tall now (serious about sharing) Long stems, fun fronds for felines.
If you are in the US, Target has some great little cat toys that are cheap! My cats love the little felt mice (3 in a package) and some little bug things with crinkly stuff on them (2 in a package), both are less than 2 bucks for the package. We’ve had the mice and bugs around here for quite awhile and they are still intact. Target also has a crinkly cat tunnel for around $10, and you can also get a pair of kitty cubes that you can velcro together to make a cool kitty cave for about the same. The tunnel and cubes are made from nylon cloth and plastic supports and are quite durable. My cats love these.
Laser lights are great and not too expensive. My cats love it. All you have to do is replace the batteried occasionally.
You can also get little crinkly mylar “balls” at Petsmart. They are about a buck each. My cats love them. A package of ping pong balls are cheap and 2 of my cats like the noise they make on the hardwood floor when they chase them around, and they bounce and roll quickly and the cats love this!
You can make toys:
Get a stick about 2-3 feet long (bamboo is great for this), tie about a yard of elastic onto the end of the stick (from the sewing section, not the real skinny elastic but the kind that is about 1/8-1/4 inch wide, less than 2 bucks) and tie a felt mouse onto the end of the elastic. Swing it around and let her chase it. Make sure you let her “catch” it sometimes too! Throw a blanket on the floor and drag the mouse on the elastic string under the blanket. Let her pounce on it! My cats love this game.
Get an old sock. Put some catnip in the toe. Tie a knot in the sock above the catnip and cut the rest of the sock off. You have a catnip ball! You can also tie this on the end of the stick toy.
One of my cats loves those tab things you pull off the gallon container of water or milk.
If you sew you can make little “mice” out of felt or other scrap fabrics. Fill with cotton balls (or cotton and catnip). No need for a tail or ears really.
Less durable but cheap and fun:
Get a clean cardboard box; tape it closed and cut a hole in 2 sides so kitty can jump in and out. Cut a tiny hole in the top and hang a felt mouse inside the box (or whatever) on a piece of elastic.
Give kitty a paper bag she can get inside. My cats love these. I use canvas shopping bags but when I go shopping I have to bring home one paper bag for the cats.
You know I have had bad luck with store bought toys. I found my kitties love best is paper wadded up. I have tired whole sheets of printer paper and they loved it, but the best is cutting a sheet in fours and wad them up tight they love love love to bat them around! When they hear the paper crinkle they all get in the hunter mode so cute!! Also, any box taped shut with a hole big enough for them to get it with some smaller holes to stick their paws out of. Cap rings off of milk cartons are fun for them too. Hang them from a small ribbon and let them chase it. Secret is you want things around that when you step on them in the dark wont hurt you~ BEEN THERE~! GOOD LUCK

if you have some good catnip you can make anything into a toy. just let it sit in the container for the night and they will have a blast the next day.
