He believed in reincarnation. He believed that in his each of his past lives he was a great soldier/general. So he would study history’s great military leaders and learn from them. If you haven’t you should see the movie Patten. It’s amazing, and it touches some on his reincarnation beliefs.

I disliked his treatment of American soldiers.
Despite the conceit ,he was a great general.
