What toys do eight month old boys really enjoy?
October 5th, 2009 | by Michael |bwiley123 asked:
I am looking for advice from other parents about what toys your eight month old really likes/liked. Right now, my son loves his Baby Jumperoo and Baby Einstein saucer he sits in. He also likes playing with the usually keys and other small things he can get his mouth. Are there any other toys we should consider? He can roll but is not able to walk or crawl yet.

Busy board: Many babies adore these activity boards that can be attached to a crib rail. They come with parts that move and spin, giving your baby a place to practice coordinating her hands with sensory experiences. He’s also getting the idea that you can make things happen to objects — so poking, twisting, squeezing, shaking, dropping, and opening things will fascinate him.
Soft dolls or stuffed animals: Babies this age often develop an attachment to a “lovey,” or favorite toy or blanket. And pediatricians encourage this connection, saying a familiar object can ease transitions later on. Still, some dolls and stuffed animals make more suitable loveys than others. Avoid ones with ribbons, plastic eyes, yarn, or anything that can be pulled off and put into your child’s mouth. And don’t get dolls so big they’re hard for your baby to pick up and explore.
Balls: Balls are fun for just about any age. Lightweight fabric balls suit this particular crowd well. Roll one back and forth between the two of you on the floor, or when he’s older, toss it across the room so he can crawl after it.
Household items: Look no farther than your kitchen cabinet for some of your baby’s favorite items. A plastic bowl, some measuring cups, and wooden spoons will entertain your baby for a long time. Open the cupboard while you’re preparing a meal and your baby will pull out a few utensils of his own and whip up something alongside you.
Wood or soft blocks: Show your baby how to stack a few blocks, and then knock them down. Pile them into containers for him — and dump them out. He’ll get the idea. Stacking blocks and filling and dumping games are wildly popular in this age group.
Moving toys: As your baby begins to crawl and move around, he’ll be more interested in toys that do the same. Find some sturdy cars he can push around the rug. Or toys that pop up when your baby pushes just the right spot.
Books: This is the age at which reading becomes more interactive and fun for both of you. Cloth or board books work well now. After you read the book, you can pass it to him so he can take a turn flipping the pages and “reading” to you.

My baby turned 8 mo on Christmas Day! I bought him a Busy Ball Choo Choo (target.com), a Move and Crawl Ball (target.com) and a Learn and Groove Table (you guessed it - target.com).
He LOVED the choo choo right away. It has balls that pop out and recycle and they really developed his grip. He was afraid of the move and crawl ball at first, because it moves and lights up and sings by itself. Both of these are designed to get him to crawl, and he JUST started crawling. We just started with the table a few weeks ago, getting him to work on standing.
BUT his favorite toy at that time was these little rubber blocks - hand me downs, mind you - that have Pooh characters on them. My sister brought them over with a bag of used toys. I think that they really like things they can pick up at this time. But the lights and music get their attention too, and really become interesting to them around 9 - 10 months.
Good Luck!

My son loved his activity table. We took the legs off and sat it on the floor for him and as he started learning to sit and crawl, we put the legs back on so it was at the right height. He is nearly walking now at 11 months and now used it to stand at and walk around it.

At 8 months, my daughter really enjoyed building block (even though they were for three-year-olds.) We built the stuff and she tore it down. She was crawling and we used this method to divert her attention from other stuff. She also really liked to chew on tags and ribbon so we bought toys that had those components.
You might consider putting your son on the floor so that he can build his strength in order to begin crawling.

I have found that my kids have loved the Fisher Price Drop and Roar Dino. it is just perfect, and my my three year old even loves it still!! You just put the balls in and they make noise, go down little passageways, come out the mouth, and down the tail! It’s too cute, and most importantly a toy that grows with them! I am however not sure if they still sell it in stores, but you can buy them off ebay for relatively cheap. And if not there is also another toy by Bright Starts from walmart, its a Drop and Giggle giraffe, it is also a blast!! Also the loved nesting cups, the play cell phones, etc. And they absolutely loved the playskool baseball toy, I for some reason cant find it, but I will give you the link to one on ebay so you can see what it looks like!!

eight-month-old babies enjoy toys that make noise when shaken and are fun to explore with their mouths.
Follow these additional safety recommendations before giving a toy to your infant.
Durability: Since babies tend to drop or throw everything they hold, their toys must be made of sturdy, unbreakable materials
Small parts: Babies learn about new objects by putting them into their mouths
Threads and strings: Never purchase toys with pieces of thread, string or ribbon longer than 4-3/4 inches (12 cm).
Test the size of the toy - In order to ensure that the size of a toy is not hazardous to your child, try putting it into an empty roll of film; if the toy fits into the roll of film or closes it like a lid, it is too small and should be considered unsafe.
you can find some good toys in my source site.
