My baby will be nine months on Sept. 4th, so he is probably around the age of your baby. He is big for his age, and already too heavy for his walker and jumperoo, but he loves them so much it is hard to take them away. Walkers, in my opinion are great. However, if he has not used one yet, I would not start at almost 9 months. He is probably cruising in some fashion to get to what he wants and is a bit past the walker stage. This age is perfect for cause and effect toys. My son’s favorite is one that he either presses a button, clicks a switch, slides the button side to side, or turns a knob and a charactor pops out of a door and sings. He has learned how to do each of the motions. Also, the see and say, where you pull the handle and the attow spins is say things like “the cow says mooooooo.” Any toy that needs action from him to do something is a cause and effect toy. I have always had a habbit of buying toys that are a bit more advanced than my son. For example, the see and say says 12mo+, but there is nothing that can hurt him it is just a bit more advanced. But, at not quite 9 months, he call pull that lever. Gross motor toys are great too. Things like activity tables he can pull up on and play with the things on top, or a push toy, or just a giant ball. Most of these are grow with me toys that can be set up different ways depending on age and developement. At this age, pretty much everything is a toy. From things baught in a store to pots pans and plastic ware. Even the tv remote (another favorite). Just have fun.
As far as crib and pack and plays, they are safe untill your little one figures out how to get out. Usually the crib is first to go, followed shortly by the pack and play. Just make sure the matress is as low as it goes, and there is nothing he can use for astepping stool. Also, make sure there is nothing in the pack and play that is over 1/3 as tall as the sides.
Hope that helps!
