Ball pit, kiddie pool, books, and the puppy. (Ok, puppy wasn't a toy - but she had so much fun with it!)

Our neighbors got their daughter (who was just 2 months older than mine) a sand box and one of those sand & water play tables. - She had a great time with those! But I think keeping clean water in the play table ended up being a pain to the parents.

She also got a few ride on toys and singing / dancing things (like Elmo) but she wasn't really into those until she was closer to 2.

Like your kid, my niece was VERY interested in boxes, water bottles and the remote control. If he is interested in those things, he is craving that learning experience that comes from looking at the water or water droplets in the water bottle, he's contemplating what he can do with that box, he is wondering what happens when he pushes the buttons on the remote control. I say, let him have those things because those things are GREAT for learning and growing a creative mind. The biggest plus: they are usually cheep or free!

For some reason I really enjoy answering questions like this. My son just had his first birthday and got quite a haul. He really seems to be grooving on the following:

The biggest hit is probably this Melissa and Doug "pound a peg" -

He just loves it.

A soft tonka truck - can't find a link but I am pretty sure I saw one at Target.

This "leapfrog learning pal"

It's kind of cool, each button on the legs will do one of four things - say the letter, say the letter sound, play a song or say the color of the button. It's not that annoying or loud and he loves it.

We are also having a lot of fun with this wooden farm puzzle:

And he's had these cardboard blocks for a while, but it's only recently that he's been building with them as well as knocking them over:

They have the added advantage of having a lot of visual jokes on them, which is fun for me.

take a toilet paper or paper towel roll and fold one end put favorite treats inside and fold the other end. take an old shoe lace or string and hang from the tops or side of the cage. also you can take old dish towels and use paper clips to make hammocks. also you can put small boxes in there for them to sleep and play in. you could get strips of cloth and braid together to make ropes and tie them to the bars of the cage, rats love to climb

Get him any toy that requires to be pushed, like a little lawn mower
it also helps to get balance.

If you can't find good rodent toys for rats you can also use wooden bird toys and stuff.

Anyways...there are simple things like
toilet paper rolls which of course are usually a favorite. Also climbing logs (basically an untreated piece of wood) which will grind down nails and provide some stimulation. If its safe let them climb around on a shelf. You can buy organic dirt from a store (no chemicals or fertilizer/food) then you can build a digging box. A digging box can have added plants...but thats only if you yourself like plants. Some people use a small box while others use like...50 gal aquariums.

now more advanced stuff.
Castles and shoebox homes can be made simply by cutting holes in boxes and stacking them on top of each other. Use rolls to connect to other buildings and such.

I haven't tried this but some of my rattery friends suggested a tube maze. Basically take some bottles (I guess 2liter would be best) and tape them together to form a clear maze.

more ideas here.
